What Pruning Actually Involves
Pruning covers structural work on young trees, where a couple of cuts at year three prevent a split trunk at year twenty. It covers fruit trees, which need the center opened for light and air and which are worked in late winter before bud break.
It covers ornamentals like dogwood and magnolia, where timing decides whether you get flowers next spring. And it covers deadwood, which is the safety half of the job. The technical part that matters is where the cut lands. A proper pruning cut sits just outside the branch collar, so the wound seals over.
What Trimming Actually Involves
Trimming is clearance and shape. Raising the canopy off a roof so the shingles dry and the gutters stop filling. Cutting back growth pressing on a fence or leaning over a driveway. Crown thinning, which means selective interior cuts so light and air move through and the tree catches less wind.
The common thread is that the reason for the work sits outside the tree. You want your space back, and a good crew gives it to you without stripping the canopy to get there.
Which One Does Your Tree Need?
Describe the problem instead of naming the service. If your sentence starts with the tree, you probably want pruning. If your sentence starts with you, you probably want trimming. Plenty of trees need both, and the visit handles both.
